Another charge-sheeted accused arrested in Feni

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday arrested another charge sheeted accused in Phulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haq murder case.

The accused is Md Omar Faruk, 22, of Mollikbari at Kadalgazi road in the town.

Subhash Chandra Saha, deputy commander of Rab-7, said the elite force, acting on a tip-off, raided the area in the afternoon and arrested Faruk, also a Jubo League activist. He was later handed over to Feni Sadar Model Police Station. 

Investigation Officer (IO) Abul Kalam Azad, also acting officer-in-charge of Feni DB Police, said they pressed charges against 56 people on August 28, 2014.

Of the charge-sheeted accused, 43 are now in jail and 16 of them confessed to their involvement in the killing under Section 164. The rest of the accused are still at large.

Phulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haq, also president of the upazila unit of Awami League, was shot and burnt to death in his car in Academy area of Feni town on May 20 the same year.

Rezaul Haque Jasim, brother of the slain upazila chairman, filed a case, accusing local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Minar and 30 to 35 other unnamed people.
