The authorities of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) yesterday cancelled appointments of 96 employees of the university.

A total of 313 class three and class four employees were appointed at different departments of the university in March this year.

Of them, 96 were dismissed due to irregularities and corruption in their appointment process, said BAU sources.

The university authorities hung a notice in the afternoon, regarding cancellation of their appointments, said the sources.

Earlier, following irregularities and corruption in job recruitment, a five-member probe body was formed, headed by Prof Dr Abul Kashem of Agriculture Extension and Education Department of BAU.

Following the probe body's recommendations, appointments of 96 employees were cancelled, said Md Saiful Islam, additional registrar of the university.

Soon after completion of their appointments, a faction of pro-Awami League teachers under the banner of Ganotantrik Shikkhak Forum started agitation on March 19, demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor Md Rafiqul Hoque for his alleged involvement in irregularities and corruption in hiring staff for the university.

To press for their one-point demand, 59 BAU teachers resigned from different administrative posts.

On April 7, the then vice chancellor resigned from his post.
