Some activists of Ghatail upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) beat up two ward councillors of Ghatail municipality in the district on Monday night.

The councillors are Mansur Ali of ward No 3, and Sheikh Mohammad Kabir Ahmed of  ward No 7. They were admitted to the Orthopaedic Hospital in Dhaka.

Kabir was attacked near Janata Cinema Hall area around 9:00pm, and his hand and leg were broken, while Mansur was attacked at Kazi Road a few minutes later and his hand was broken.

Both councillors are followers of local Awami League (AL) lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, while the men who attacked them are supporters of Shahidul Islam Lebu, convenor of Ghatail upazila unit of AL.

Local sources said the two councillors were beaten up over celebrating the founding anniversary of BCL separately, and for giving status over the celebration on Facebook.

Shahidul Islam Lebu, however, said his men attacked the supporters of MP Rana as they (the two councillors) were trying to intercept their procession in Amtola area in the municipality.

The councillors could not be contacted for their comments on the matter.

Contacted, Mohammad Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ghatail Police Station, said he was informed about the attack on the ward councillors, but neither side had lodged any complaint to police over the matter.

"Necessary steps will be taken after getting any complaint," he added.

Amanur Rahman Khan Rana has been absconding from his constituency for the last one year after police disclosed his name as a suspect in the Tangail AL leader Faruk Ahmed murder case.
