Cop stabbed to death by muggers in Cox's Bazar, 2 held
A policeman was stabbed to death by muggers in Cox's Bazar while another was injured by extortionists in Nilphamari district yesterday.
In Cox's Bazar, muggers killed a police constable in front of the Civil Surgeon's Office in beach area of Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Parvez Hossain, 27, a tourist police constable, reports UNB.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Jahirul Islam said Parvez riding a motorbike chased a gang of three in another motorcycle in the area around 7:30am.
The police constable got down from the motorcycle when the muggers stopped their vehicle in front of the Civil Surgeon's Office.
The muggers attacked Parvez and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was rushed to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Local people also caught two muggers from the spot and handed them over to police. However, the rest managed to flee the scene.
Away in Nilphamari, a police official was injured as extortionists attacked him on Rangpur-Jaldhaka road in Jaldhaka upazila of the district the same day.
The victim is Mahbubul Huq, assistant sub-inspector of Jaldhaka Police Station, reports our correspondent.
Police and locals said a group of unruly youths took tolls from bus, microbus and truck drivers and car and motorbike owners on the road in the name of Eid reunion.
Being informed, a police team, led by the ASI, rushed to the spot and tried to disperse the youths. At this, the extortionists became furious and assaulted ASI Mahbubul.
Later, police arrested one Roman Huq, 19, son of Sultan Ali of Binnakuri village, from the spot. However, the rest attackers managed to flee the scene.
The injured police official was admitted to the upazila health complex, said Hasan Imam Enam, officer-in-charge of the PS.
