Criminals fell 100 banana trees in Rangpur

Criminals felled banana trees and uprooted potato and wheat plants on 75 decimals of land at Gaburar Char village under Pirgachha upazila of the district on Thursday.

Police and villagers said there was a longstanding conflict between Abdul Jalil, 45, and Sayeed Ali, 50, of the village over the ownership of two acres and eight decimals of land.

On Thursday noon, a group of people, including Sayeed Ali, Taleb Mian, 55, Hamid Mian, 53, Zafar Mian, 60, Maham Mian,, 57, and Shukkur Ali, 45, went to the land and felled over 100 banana trees and uprooted potato and wheat plants cultivated by Jalil on the land.

Jalil said Sayeed threatened him with death over mobile phone as he told the police about the matter. Jalil claimed that his loss could go up to Tk 1.1 lakh.

Md Nazir Hossain, chairman of Chhaola Union Parishad (UP) in the upazial demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.

Tajul Islam, sub-inspector of Pirgachha Police Station, said he visited the spot on Friday and found that the villagers were trying to settle the issue.

No case in connection with the incident was filed the police station concerned as of 5:00pm yesterday.

Contacted, Md Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Pirgachha Police Station, said police would take necessary steps if the victim filed a written complaint in this regard.
