Four to die for killing college student

A Manikganj court yesterday sentenced four people to death and another to seven years imprisonment for killing a college student in Singair upazila in 2017.

Manikganj District and Sessions Judge Mamtaz Begum pronounced the verdict in the presence of the convicts.

The death sentence awardees are Hajrat Ali, Samsu Mia, Rakib Ahmed and Jahangir, while Helalur Rahman was sentenced for seven years imprisonment.

According to the case statement, Rasel, 18, son of Ansar Fakir of Purbabhakum village in the upazila, also an Intermediate student at Savar Legend College, went missing on November 26, 2017. 

Two days after the incident, Rasel’s father Ansar lodged a general diary (GD) with Singair Police Station in this regard.

Later, a gang phoned the victim’s family members and demanded Tk 2.5 lakh for Rasel’s release.

After six days of the missing incident, police recovered Rasel’s body from an abandoned site of a housing company.

On July 12 in 2018, police submitted the charge-sheet before the court against five people.

After cross examining 22 witnesses, Judge Mamtaz Begum handed down the verdict yesterday afternoon.
