An elderly couple was strangled by criminals in Natore yesterday while a woman allegedly killed her husband in Meherpur district the day before.

A freedom fighter and his wife were murdered in Singra upazila of Natore district early yesterday, reports our correspondent.

The deceased are FF Nani Gopal Kundu, 75, and his wife Chitta Rani Kundu, 65, of Parsaoil village.

They have two sons--Pulak Kandu and Pinak Kandu--living in India, said locals.

Criminals might have strangled the couple over previous enmity at around 3:00amsaid Nasir Uddin Mandal, officer-in-charge of Singra Police Station, adding that Nani Gopal's hands and legs were tied with rope.

The bodies were sent to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the OC.

Singra Muktijoddha Sangsad gave a seven-day ultimatum to the local police to arrest the killers within the deadline, otherwise the unit threatened to launch a tougher agitation in the upazila.

Meanwhile, the district law and order committee at a meeting yesterday condemned the killing and observed a one minute-silence in memory of the couple.

No case was filed in this connection as of filing of this report around 6:00pm yesterday.

In Meherpur, a man was killed allegedly by his wife in Sadar upazila of the district on Saturday, reports our Kushtia correspondent.

Early yesterday, police arrested Selina Khatun, 36, wife of Azizur Rahman of Madanga village, for her alleged involvement in the killing.

Police said Selina hit Azizur with a bamboo stick, leaving him critically injured following an altercation over a family matter on Saturday afternoon.

Later, Azizur died at Meherpur Sadar Hospital, said OC Ahsan Habib of Sadar Police Station.
