Girl 'raped' on bus in Mymensingh

A driver allegedly raped a 19-year-old girl inside a bus in Mymensingh's Nandail intersection area on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road early yesterday.

Police arrested Alamgir Hossain, 25, the driver who hails from Pumbail in the district's Gouripur upazila.

Quoting the girl, Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Nandail Police Station, said the incident happened after she got onto a Kishoreganj-bound local bus at Ishwarganj upazila around 2:00pm on Tuesday. She was on her way to meet her brother, a garment worker, in Narsingdi.

When the bus reached Nandail intersection in the afternoon, the driver suddenly cancelled the trip.

Later, he along with two conductors -- Shahjalal and Mosharraf Hossain -- convinced the girl to pass the night on the bus, assuring her of helping to board a Kishoreganj-bound bus the next morning, said Ataur.

However, around 12:30am yesterday, Alamgir entered the vehicle and raped the girl. Shahjalal and Mosharraf were standing in front of the door, added the OC.

Hearing the scream of the girl, locals rushed to the spot and caught Alamgir. The other two fled.

The driver was handed over to police.

Later in the day, the arrestee was produced before a Mymensingh court with a seven-day remand plea after the girl filed a case with Nandail Police Station against the trio.

The court, however, sent him to jail, said the police officer, adding they were raiding several places to arrest the two conductors.

The girl, who is under police custody, would have her forensic test at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital today, he added.
