Girl raped, coach held for 'seducing' female athlete

A minor schoolgirl was raped allegedly by a youth at Belta village in Sharsha upazila of Jessore district on Monday.

Kamrul Islam, son of Ekser Ali of the village, picked up the fifth grader when she went to a field near her house to bring their goats back home in the afternoon.

Kamrul took the girl to the irrigation pump machine room at the field and raped her.

Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and rescued the girl. However, Kamrul managed to flee the scene.

The victim was later sent to Jessore Medical College Hospital, said police.

The law enforcers are raiding different areas to arrest the culprit, said Md Maniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station.

A case was filed in this connection.

Meanwhile, police arrested the coach of a female athletes' team of Jessore from Bejpara in the district town the same day on charge of seducing a female athlete of the national level.

The arrestee was identified as Srinibash Haldar, son of Mohanand Haldar, a resident of Bejpara, reports UNB.

According to the case statement, the victim used to live in a rented house at Missionpara in the town.

Coach Srinibash seduced the female athlete several times taking advantage of her gullibility.

On Monday noon, Srinibash along with his associates took the athlete to Jess Garden in Bahadurpur in the town and snatched away her mobile phones and destroyed all evidence, like messages and video footages, linked to their relation.

He also took away Tk 5,000 and a gold ornament from the victim.

At night, she filed a case against Srinibash with Kotwali Model Police Station in this connection, said Sub-inspector Jamal Uddin of the police station.
