Housewife killed for dowry in Gaibandha

A housewife was killed allegedly by her husband for dowry at Burna Akub village in Gobindaganj upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased is Sumi Akhter, 25, wife of Shamim Mia of the village.

Police quoted locals as saying that Shamim often tortured his wife for dowry. The couple had an altercation over the issue yesterday morning. At one stage, Shamim beat up Sumi mercilessly, leaving her dead on the spot.

Shamim went into hiding soon after the incident.

Being informed by locals, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Away in Jhenidah, a five-year-old girl, who was abducted on July 7, was found dead at Achintapur village in Sadar upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The victim is Monira Khatun, daughter of Ramzan Ali of the village.

Ramzan said Monira went missing around 5:30pm on July 7. At around 10:00pm the same night, an unknown caller phoned him and demanded Tk 3 lakh as ransom for his daughter release.

The following morning, Ramzan filed a general diary (GD) with Sadar Police Station in this connection.

Police detained victim's cousin Jihad Hossain, 20, on Sunday morning, suspecting his involvement in the incident.

Later, according to his confessional statement, police recovered Monira's body from a filed at the village, said Altaf Hossain, Jhenidah Superintendent of Police.
