Land disputes leave 2 dead in Mymensingh, Kurigram
Two people were killed over land disputes in Mymensingh and Kurigram districts yesterday.
A woman was killed in an attack over a piece of disputed land at Narayanpur village in Sadar upazila of Mymensingh early yesterday.
The deceased is Anwara Khatun, 55, wife of Yasin Ali of the village, reports our correspondent.
Police and family sources said there was a longstanding conflict between Yasin and his brother-in-law Abdus Sattar over the land.
As a sequel to the conflict, Sattar and his son allegedly swooped on the house of Yasin and took away cash and gold ornaments on February 2 this year.
Later, Yasin's daughter Rokeya Begum filed robbery case with Kotwali Police Station against Sattar and his family members. After filing of the case, the same gang allegedly attacked Yasin's house on February 17, sources said.
Over the previous enmity, the both sides locked in an altercation around 12.30pm yesterday. At one stage of altercation, Sattar and his men tried to attack Yasin.
Hearing scrams, Anwara came forward to save her husband but they attacked her with sharp weapons, leaving her dead on the spot, said Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The law enforcers detained Sattar's wife Yasmin Rehena, 45, for interrogation, said the OC.
In Kurigram, a man was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups over a disrupted land in Mogalbasha union under Sadar upazila of the district the same day.
The deceased is Akhtar Hossain, 40, son of Ahmed Hossain of Malbhanga village in the union.
Police said there had been a longstanding conflict between Ahmed, 85, and his step brother Abdus Sobhan, 80, over taking control of 32 decimals of land in the area.
As a sequel to the conflict, supporters of the two attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving 11 people from both sides injured.
Of the injured, Akhtar died on way to Kurigram Sadar Hospital. Police arrested one Tajul, 40, and Rafiqul, 35, in connection with the killing, said Mohammad Ruhani, inspector of Sadar Police Station.
