Man jailed for torturing wife for dowry

A Gaibandha court on Monday sentenced a man to one and a half years imprisonment for torturing wife for dowry.

The convict is M Mashiur Rahman Khan, 31, son of M Mahshin Ali Khan of Bara Daudpur village in Sadullahpur upazila.

The court also fined the convict Tk 2,000. In default, he is to suffer 15 more days in jail.

According to the prosecution, Mashiur married Nur Hawa Begum,

daughter of Nurul Islam of Kanchibari village in Sundarganj upzaila of the district in 2011.

Mashiur had been demanding dowry from his in laws and used to torture Hawa over the issue since their marriage.

As Hawa refused to bring money from her parents, Mashiur sent her to her father's house.

In 2013, Hawa filed a case with the Judicial Magistrate's Court, Gaibandha, against her husband.

After examining all documents and witnesses, Judge M Maniruzzaman Sikdar of Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court-1 handed down the verdict.
