Manikganj BCL leader held for assaulting engineer

Police arrested Samapta Hossain, a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader and prime accused in a case for assaulting an engineer for Tk 1 lakh, from a house in Dashara area of Manikganj town on Sunday night.

Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Manikganj Sadar Police Station, said they yesterday produced Samapta in the Judicial Magistrate's Court, seeking seven days remand. The judge sent him to jail

A gang of BCL men led by Samapta assaulted Alamgir Hossain, project-in-charge of Navana Construction, at his office at Char Bewtha in Manikganj on Sunday morning as he refused to give them Tk 1 lakh.

Samapta, former vice president of district unit of BCL, had been demanding Tk 1 lakh from him for the last seven days for giving reception to the newly elected mayor Gazi Kamrul Huda Selim (AL rebel candidate).

Samapta and six accomplices went to Alamgir's site office at around 11:00am. They first forced the people in the room to leave and then demanded Tk 1 lakh from him. Engineer Alamgir alleged that the BCL men started beating him up with sticks when he refused to give them any money.

Alamgir filed a case with Manikganj Police Station against seven people, including Samapta Hossain.

Meanwhile, police arrested three people who tried to foil the annual milad mehfil of Government Devendra College in Manikganj town yesterday.

The arrestees are Aminur Rahman, 22, son of Abdur Razzak, Sobuj Mia, 30, son of Pannu Mia and Farhad Hossain, 20, son of Faruk Hossain of Joyra village under Manikganj Sadar upazila.

Prof Md Shahjahan, principal of the college, said the milad mehfil programme began at around 10:30am. The culprits are outsiders, and they entered the venue to foil the programme, he added.
