Mother, son to die for killing couple

A court here yesterday sentenced a woman and her son to death for killing a couple over land dispute in Kapasia upazila of the district in 2011.

The convicts are Anowara Begum, 45, wife of Rahmat Ali, alias Romo, 50, and her son Mostafa, 27, of Noyapara village in the upazila.

The court also sentenced Rahmat Ali and his daughter Rahima Begum, 23, to life imprisonment and fined them Tk 10,000 each.

According to the case statement, there was a conflict over the ownership of a land between Rahmat Ali and his neighbour Mohammed Suruj Ali. As Suruj Ali was going to the land on November 13, 2011, Rahmat Ali stopped him on the way.

They locked in an altercation over the issue. At one stage, Rahmat Ali and his wife and son hit Suruj Ali with sharp weapons, leaving him dead on the spot.

When Suruj Ali's wife Honufa tried to save her husband, they attacked her also. Critically injured Honufa was admitted to a hospital where she died the following day.

Mohammed Shahjahan Sheikh, brother of Suruj Ali, filed a murder case with Kapasia Police Station, accusing Anowara, Rahmat, Mostafa and Rahima. Police later pressed charges against them.

After a long hearing, Judge AKM Enamul Haque of the District and Sessions Judge's Court handed down the verdict.
