Mudslide kills two in C'nawabganj
Two people were killed as a big chunk of earth from the Padma River embankment fell on them in Bahalabari area of Shibganj upazila yesterday.
The deceased are Sirajul Islam, 45, son of Nurshed Ali, and Mohammad Dukhu, 35, son of Tofazzal Hossain of Babupur village in the upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moinul Islam of Shibganj Police Station said Sirajul and Dukhu went to the river dyke in Bahalabari area at around 12:30am to illegally collect geo textile bags, which are used to protect embankment from erosion.
When they were collecting geo textile bags, a big chunk of earth fell on the two, killing them on the spot, the OC added.
As Sirajul and Dukhu did not return to their houses in the morning, family members went to the area and found two spades there. They with the help of locals pulled out the bodies from under the soil.
Being informed by locals, police went to spot at around 9:00am, recovered the bodies and sent them to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
