One killed, two injured in trawler capsize

A man was killed and two others were injured as a timber-laden trawler capsized in the Lohalia River after being hit by a passenger launch in Palerdanga area under Sadar upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased was identified as driver of the trawler Jamal Hossain, 30, of Sutabaria village in Galachipa upazila.

The injured, staff of the trawler Miraj Hossain, 30, and Faku, 25, of the same village, were admitted to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital.

The accident took place when the double decker launch MV Eagle-3 hit the Patuakhali-bound trawler coming from Sutabaria village around 7:00am.

Later, locals recovered the body from the river, said SM Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Patuakhali Police Station.

The body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.

A staff of the launch went into hiding soon after the incident, said police. 

Md Shafiqul Islam, director of navel security of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said they are investigating the incident.
