Post-polls violence leaves 20 hurt in Sirajganj
At least 20 people were injured in post-polls violence in Bahirgola area under Sadar upazila of Sirajganj district yesterday.
The men of elected councillor Shahadat Hossain and defeated councillor candidate Shahdat Hossain Buddin had an altercation around 12 noon.
At one stage, the rival groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving at least 20 people from both sides injured.
The injured include Jahangir Hossain, 45, Mohabbat Ali, 38, Piar Khan, 40, Shariful Islam, 30, Ismail Hossain, 25, Sabuj, 36, Selim, 35, Rabiul Islam, 35, Bani Hossain, 28, Munna, 30, Roky, 20, and Bijoy, 28, of Bhangabari village in the upazila.
Failing to get elected, the men of defeated councillor candidate carried out the attack, alleged elected councillor Shahadat.
Contacted, Buddin refuted the allegation of attacking the men of Shahadat.
The situation is now under control, said Habibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
In Mymensingh, police yesterday arrested two Awami League activists on charge of killing a Jubo League man in Trishal municipality of the district the day before, in an apparent post-election violence.
The arrestees are Chand Miah, 35, and Mazharul Islam Sumon, 30, loyal to rebel AL candidate ABM Anisuzzaman.
The victim, Md Parvez, 23, a member of Ward No 3 unit of Jubo League, was hacked to death on Friday.
Parvez, loyal to defeated AL mayor candidate Jahidul Islam Sarker, was attacked allegedly by supporters of Anisuzzaman, winner AL rebel candidate in the municipality, at night.
Two other Jubo League activists -- Asar Ali, 22, and Delwar Hossain Delu, 22 -- were also injured in the attack.
A gang of 15/20 attacked Parvez on his way home around 10:20pm, leaving him dead on the spot, said Md Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Trishal Police Station.
