Robber gang leader killed in 'gunfight' with cops

The ringleader of an inter-district robber gang was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Kanaipur in Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Selim Sheikh, 30, of Madhukhali upazila of the district.

Receiving information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 3:30am.

Sensing the presence of the team, the robbers opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.

At one stage, Selim received bullets and died on the spot while others managed to flee, police sources said.

A sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, was also injured in the incident, sources said, adding that police recovered one shutter gun, one pistol and a bullet from the spot.

Selim was wanted in several cases filed with Bhanga and Sadar police station in the district, police said.
