Robber hurt in 'gunfight' with cops
A robber sustained bullet injuries during a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and detectives in Laxmipur Sadar upazila early yesterday.
The injured robber, Mehraj Uddin, is an accused in several cases, including for murder, police said.
Receiving information that members of a robber gang gathered at Jafarpur for committing robbery in the area, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police raided the village at around 2:00am, said officer-in-charge Mohammad Abul Bashar of Laxmipur DB Police.
Sensing the presence of the DB men, the gang opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate. Mehraj received bullet wounds while the rest managed to flee, the OC said, adding that four policemen also received injuries during the gunfight.
Police later arrested Mehraj from the spot and admitted him to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital. The also recovered a rifle, a light gun (LG) and four bullets from there.
Away in Sunamganj, masked robbers looted an expatriate's house at Gandharbapur village in Jagannathpur upazila early yesterday.
Quoting locals, police said a gang of 10/12 entered the house of Jhunu Mia, an expatriate in Saudi Arabia, and took away Tk 55,000, 11 tolas of gold ornaments and other valuables from the house.
