An alleged robber was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and police at Dharanti village in Sarail upazila early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Bashir, 40, a resident of the village.

Receiving information that a gang of 10-12 robbers was taking preparation to commit a robbery at the village, a police team conducted a drive there around 3:00am, said Ali Arshad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sarail Police Station.

Sensing the presence of the police team, robbers opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.

Bashir was shot and died on the spot while the rest of the gang managed to flee, the OC said, adding that three policemen were also injured during the gunfight.

Police recovered Bashir's body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
