Robbers active on highway in Jhenidah

Robbers blocked Dhaka-Khulna highway near Roghunathpur bus stand under Kaliganj upazila of the district by felling trees early yesterday and started looting vehicles.

On November 18, robbers blocked the highway by felling trees around half a kilometre from the Dulalmundia Bazar area and looted many night coaches, trucks and buses carrying wedding parties.

Frequent robberies on the Dhaka-Khulna highway have created panic among drivers and passengers. Police might be involved in such crimes, drivers alleged.

In the span of four months from September to December, the number of robberies on the Dhaka-Khulna  highway has risen four times.

Nazrul Islam, a member of a wedding party, said his microbus was attacked by robbers at Dulalmundia Bazar area. The gang took away money and valuables from the passengers.

Truck driver Akkaj Ali said he was stopped by robbers early yesterday, but they could not take any money from him as he locked the door of his truck. 

Rajab Ali Montu, secretary of Kaliganj Motor Sramik Union, said he had heard about the robberies, and he would inform the authorities concerned of the matter.

Farid Bhuyan, officer-in-charge of Barobazar highway police camp, said they were patrolling the area to prevent robberies.
