Robbers loot 3 jewellery shops in Barisal

A gang of robbers looted cash and gold ornaments from three jewellery shops at  Harinatpur Bazar in Hizla upazila of the district early Tuesday.

The incident happened 150 yards from the police and coast guard camp, local businessmen said.

Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Hizla Police Station, said the gang made the five night guards of the market unconscious before looting the shops.

Police detained the guards for interrogation, and have started drives to recover the looted items and arrest the robbers.

Manomohan Bhakto, a jeweller in the market, said the robbers broke the locks of the jewellery shops belonging to Dhala Bhakto, Proshanta Kumar and Ranjit Saha and looted Tk 15 lakh.

The robbers also took an iron safe weighing 15 maunds from Proshanta Kumar's shop and left the scene in a trawler. Local jewellers kept gold and ornaments worth around Tk 1 core in that safe, Manomohan said.
