Shantahar mayor arrested in two murder cases
The newly elected, BNP-nominated mayor of Shantahar municipality under Adamdighi upazila of the district was arrested from Bogra deputy commissioner's (DC) office yesterday afternoon.
Mayor Tofazzal Hossain Bhutto, 48, also the organising secretary of Shantahar municipality unit of BNP, was elected for the second time, defeating AL-nominated Rafiqul Islam Raza.
Local BNP and family sources said he went to the DC's office at around 2:00pm to inquire about his oath taking because he could not take oath on January 15 with the other elected mayors. Tofazzal said he was on bail and he went to there to meet the officials regarding his oath taking.
Police said Bhutto was an accused in the cases for killing Jubo league leader Shafiqul Islam and Jatiya Party leader Sohag during a clash between the activists of Sramik League and Jatiya Party at Shantahar on January 8, 2016.
Contacted, Gaziur Rahman, senior assistant superintendent of police (ASP) (B Circle and media) of Bogra police, said Tofazzal will be produced before the court on Friday morning after interrogation at the DB office.
