Transport leader stabbed in Mymensingh, 8 sued

Eight people were sued yesterday on charge of stabbing a transport leader in the district town the day before.

Habibur Rahman Habib, 32, joint secretary of Mymensingh district Transport Owners' Association, was stabbed allegedly by rival workers in Patgudam bus stand area of the town on Sunday.

Seriously injured Habib was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said police.

Later, Habib's father Suruj Miah filed a case with Kotwali Police Station, accusing the eight people.

The accused include Md Nazrul Islam, 45, newly elected president of District Transport Workers' Association, and his associates Mohammad Ali, 35, and Jane Alam, 33.

The law enforcers arrested Jane Alam from Krishtapur area in the town early yesterday, said Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station.

There had been a feud over the election of District Transport Workers' Association held on December 25, said police.

Following the feud, the workers loyal to Nazrul equipped with sharp weapons attacked Habib in Patgudam bus stand area around 7:00pm on Sunday.

At one stage, the attackers stabbed Habib, leaving him seriously injured.

As the news spread, Habib's supporters blocked Mymensingh-Sherpur road for about an hour.

Later, they withdrew the blockade following an assurance by police of taking steps to bring the attackers to book.

Contacted, Nazrul refuted the allegation of attacking Habib.
