Woman burnt alive, two others injured

An elderly woman was burnt alive and two other women of the family were injured at Kachasara village in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased is Anwara Begum, 65, wife of late Sohrab Uddin of the village.

Police quoted locals as saying that a portion of Anwara's sari caught fire while she was cooking with dried bamboo leaves in the yard at around 10:00am. 

As the fire engulfed Anwara's entire body, her daughters-in-law, Bilkis Begum, 28, and Marzina Begum, 35, rushed in to save her and also sustained burn injuries.

Anwara succumbed to her injuries on way to Jamalpur General Hospital around 2:30pm.

Bilkis and Marzina were admitted to the hospital and then referred to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated, said Joynal Abedin, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station.
