Youth takes own life after killing college boy

A young man committed suicide after killing a college student at Hatosharipur village in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday.

The victim is Sujan Mahmud, a 1st year Commerce student at Kushtia Islamia College and son of Mohabbat Hossain of the village.

Zoynal Abedin, additional superintendent of police (ASP), Kushtia, said Palash Hossain, 22, son of Mintu Sheikh of the same village, swooped on Sujan while he was returning home from the college at around 9:30am. He stabbed Sujan with a chisel, leaving him critically injured.

Sujan was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where he died at around 10:30am.

Palash took shelter at his grandfather's house, about half a kilometer from the spot, when he was chased by people after the incident. He locked the room from the inside. 

On information, a police team from Kushtia Model Police Station and members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-12 rushed to the spot. 

Angry people attacked the house and tried to break the lock of the room to bring Palash out. Failing to pacify them, police fired 7/8 rubber bullets to disperse the mob that left three minor boys injured. Of them, Mehedi Hassan, a six-year-old student of Old Kushtia High School is undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital.

When Palash heard about Sujan's death from inside the room, he hanged himself from the ceiling at around 11:40am.

Police later broke open the door of the room and found Palash hanging from the ceiling.

Police could not unearth clue to the stabbing of Sujan as of 5:30pm yesterday.
