There is magic in Messi’s game: Deepa Khandakar
Deepa Khandakar has been an avid supporter of Argentina. Speaking to The Daily Star about the FIFA World Cup and her love for football, the actress revealed that she has been supporting the team since she was quite young.
“Everyone in my family supported the team when I was growing up, and naturally I followed them as well. Even now, Argentina remains my favourite side.”
Asked which Argentine player she enjoys watching the most, Deepa had an immediate answer.
“Without a doubt, Lionel Messi,” she said. “There’s a kind of magic in the way he plays. He has an extraordinary ability to carry the ball and create opportunities out of nothing. I enjoy watching many players from Argentina, but Messi is my favourite. In fact, I think even supporters of rival teams admire his talent and appreciate what he brings to the game.”
Although Argentina holds a special place in her heart, Deepa says she enjoys watching several other international teams as well.
“I follow several European teams and enjoy their style of playing,” she explained. “At the end of the day, football is about enjoyment. Every few years, the World Cup comes around, and people everywhere come together to celebrate the sport.”
The World Cup often sparks immense enthusiasm in Bangladesh, sometimes reaching a fever pitch. Deepa views passion positively. “I see it as something very positive,” she said. “However, it is important that we do not take things too far. Football should be enjoyed while maintaining respect, friendship and unity among supporters.”

Recalling memories from the previous World Cup final, she shared how football briefly took centre stage, even during work.
“I was shooting that day,” she remembered. “The entire unit worked together while also keeping an eye on the match. The shoot ended later than planned because it was the World Cup final. It’s a memory I will never forget. We all watched the match together and enjoyed every moment of it.”
As for her expectations from Argentina in the upcoming tournament, the actress remains hopeful.
“Of course, my expectations are high,” she said with a smile. “Let’s see what happens. Like every supporter, I’m hopeful. Football can always produce surprises, but I’m optimistic and looking forward to the competition.”
When asked whether she had watched Diego Maradona play, Deepa reflected fondly on the Argentine legend.
“Yes, many years ago,” she said. “He was an extraordinary footballer. Watching Maradona was always a special experience. There was something unique and beautiful about the way he played. That is why he remains Maradona.”
