Dhaka University kicks off Pahela Baishakh preparations
Preparations for celebrating Pahela Baishakh and the Bangla New Year 1433 formally began today at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University.
DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha inaugurated the preparatory activities as the chief guest, while the programme was presided over by Prof Dr Md Azharul Islam Sheikh, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Ekushey Padak-winning artist Prof Dr Abdus Sattar attended as special guest.
Among others, DU Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmed, assistant proctors, teachers and students of the faculty, as well as cultural personalities and artists, were present.
Speaking at the programme, Prof Bidisha thanked the faculty’s teachers, students and alumni for undertaking comprehensive preparations to celebrate the Bangla New Year.
She said preliminary activities have already begun through various committees to ensure a successful celebration.
The university administration is working to celebrate the occasion in a peaceful, disciplined, festive and joyful atmosphere, she added, calling for cooperation from all concerned.
Meanwhile, at an inter-ministerial meeting held yesterday, a set of nationwide programmes was finalised under the initiative of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to mark the Bangla New Year.
The programmes include the publication of special supplements carrying messages from the president, the prime minister and relevant ministers; a Mangal Shobhajatra procession and cultural programmes organised by DU’s Faculty of Fine Arts; and celebrations arranged by cultural organisations, including Chhayanaut.
Strict security measures will be enforced across the country by law enforcement agencies. Special programmes will also be broadcast on government and private television channels and radio stations.
At district and upazila levels, Baishakhi rallies, cultural events and folk fairs will be organised.
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will arrange programmes at central and regional levels, while all educational institutions will celebrate the occasion in a festive manner.
Special cultural activities involving children will be organised through the Shishu Academy.
Additionally, special meals and cultural programmes will be arranged in prisons, hospitals and children’s homes to mark the occasion.
