Uttam Kumar at 100: The ‘Mahanayak’ endures

Mahanayak Uttam Kumar remains one of the most popular and beloved heroes in Bengali cinema. With his ever-smiling face and charismatic screen presence, he continues to hold a special place in the hearts of generations.

Today marks the 100th birth anniversary of the eternal hero, whose remarkable acting earned him the title of “Mahanayak” (Great Hero) in Bengali cinema.

Looking back at Uttam Kumar’s filmography reveals the remarkable range of characters he portrayed throughout his career. He adapted himself to changing times, constantly reinventing himself while immersing himself in every role he played.

That ability to make each character his own is perhaps why his performances, from "Sharey Chuattar", his first film opposite Suchitra Sen, to Satyajit Ray’s "Nayak", continue to feel fresh and contemporary. Uttam Kumar truly epitomises the ever-modern hero.

Uttam Kumar was born in Kolkata on September 3, 1926. His real name was Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay. He was the son of Satkari Chattopadhyay and Chapla Devi and the eldest of three siblings.

He began his acting career in 1948 with "Drishtidan". His first film as a leading man was "Mayador", although the film was never released. It was his performance in "Basu Paribar", however, that brought him widespread recognition and established him as a promising actor.

Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen

Uttam Kumar first appeared opposite Suchitra Sen in "Sharey Chuattar", marking the beginning of one of Bengali cinema’s most iconic screen pairings. Their chemistry and acting prowess made the Uttam-Suchitra duo immensely popular, and their films continue to be celebrated decades later.

Their notable films include "Harano Sur", "Pathey Holo Deri", "Chaowa Pawa", "Bipasha", "Jiban Trishna", "Sagarika" and "Saptapadi".
Over the course of his career, Uttam Kumar acted in more than 200 films. His notable works include "Anthony Firingee", "Nayak", "Pathey Holo Deri", "Agni Parikshya", "Saptapadi", "Jhinder Bandi", "Harano Sur", "Sagarika", "Putrabadhu", "Champa Dangar Bou", "Rai Kamal", "Chowringhee", "Nishipadma", "Bon Palashir Padabali" and "Ogo Bodhu Sundari".

He also collaborated with Satyajit Ray in "Nayak" and "Chiriyakhana". In "Chiriyakhana", he played the iconic detective Byomkesh Bakshi.

Uttam Kumar also appeared in several Hindi films, including "Amanush", "Chhoti Si Mulaqat" and "Ananda Ashram".

Uttam Kumar, the Singer

Acting was not Uttam Kumar’s only passion. He was deeply fond of music and considered songs an important part of his life. He even lent his own voice to songs for films in which he acted.

In "Nabajanma", directed by Debaki Kumar Bose and released on December 28, 1956, Uttam Kumar sang six songs composed by Nachiketa Ghosh. Among them were "Kanu Kohe Rai, Kohite Dorai" and "Ami Angul Katiya".

His contribution to cinema was also recognised with major awards. In 1967, Uttam Kumar won the National Award for his performances in "Anthony Firingee" and "Chiriyakhana". At the time, the award was known as the Bharat Award. Earlier, in 1957, he received the President’s Certificate of Merit for his performance in Ajoy Kar’s "Harano Sur".

A Life Beyond the Screen

Uttam Kumar was married to Gauri Devi, and the couple had one son, Gautam Chattopadhyay. Gautam died of cancer at the age of 53. Uttam Kumar’s only grandson is actor Gaurav Chattopadhyay.

Uttam Kumar passed away on July 24, 1980, at the age of 53. Until his death, he remained in a long-term relationship with actress Supriya Devi, with whom he spent the final 17 years of his life.

More than four decades after his death, Uttam Kumar’s appeal remains undiminished. His films continue to be watched, his performances continue to be discussed, and his image remains deeply embedded in Bengali popular culture.
