Dumb Phone Pride

What is a dumb phone? This term comes into use when we actually consider smart phones to be 'smart', thus making all other phones dumb. But are dumb phones really as handicapped as they sound? Are these phones really throwaway technology or are they actually testaments of a tougher generation -- stronger in performance and longer in lifetime; phones that you could actually trust?
Everyone uses smart phones nowadays. They can be bought at meagre prices and meagre is how they perform. Yes, there are those high end phones that people sell kidneys to buy, but is a smart phone really worth a kidney? Apparently, that's a question for the ages, but let us look at the 'dumb' alternatives. At modest prices you get phones that are sure to perform to your highest desire, with battery lives longer than your working hours. Of the whole week! These phones are manufactured by world renowned brands that have sadly failed in the smart phone market, but these phones are the building blocks of the history of phones. They are literally as solid as bricks, try throwing them at someone. Serious injuries may be caused.
What is it that you're actually missing if you don't use a smart phone? The first and the most obvious answer would be apps. Apps have become an inseparable part of our lives. Ask your mom if she can breathe easy without playing Candy Crush for more than 12 hours. We all know the answer to that one. An angry “NO”. If you are one of those freaks who can score more than 3 on Flappy Bird, could you stay away from it all day? What would you do with your time if there was no WhatsApp and the Facebook app; what would happen to your social life? To be honest, your virtual social life would suffer, but maybe you'd finally have time for that best friend you once had who wanted to just chill with you, in actual physical space. Without the addiction of Android or iOS apps (Windows apps suck anyway), you could probably do productive things with your time. And people keep forgetting about the magical Symbian and Java apps, the beautiful experience of using internet on a dumb phone, with the divine blessing of Opera Mini.
Yes, apps are a big loss. They are a huge part of the smart phone experience, but it would be a mistake to forget what dumb phones give you. They offer you never ending battery lives, and you only have to charge them once a week, maybe more, depending on your phone's age. These phones are strong; they hardly ever have any software or hardware malfunction, and they don't break into a million pieces whenever you drop them. Dumb phones are dumb, yes, but like dumb people, they are blessed elsewhere. If you think closely, strength for smartness is a very logical trade off. That could be good advice for life. The tortured nerds at school would agree.
Some would argue, smart phones that are expensive are amazing, they are smart AND strong. But they lose this debate at its beginning. With the purchase of an expensive phone, you purchase the fear of robbery. Every bad guy in your area remembers your face the moment you pop out a new shiny iPhone, or the newest Samsung delicacy. This risk alone should be enough to convince someone about the pride in using dumb phones. You will never become a mugging target, and you can safely flash your phone in public because despite their undeniable awesomeness, few people actually want a dumb phone.
