Farmlands shrinking alarmingly
Farmlands shrinking alarmingly
The size of our cultivable land is decreasing every year due to massive urbanisation and industrialisation. We had 9.2 million hectares of farmland according to the agriculture census conducted in 1983-84. In 1996 it came down to 8.2 million hectares. If this trend continues, we will not have enough cultivable lands left after next few decades to feed our growing population.
I urge the government as well as NGOs to take initiatives for planned urbanisation in order to save our cultivable land.
