It seems climate change is really no imaginary thing. The world climate is changing rapidly rather than slowly. This year Dhaka's temperature rose to a staggering 40 degree Celsius. Shouldn't we be alarmed? Shouldn't we play our part to save the country from the hazards of climate change? Surely, we understand now from the various climate conferences that the developed world is least bothered about climate change and its effects on the third world countries. Since we are affected by climate change, we must do what we can to fight this evil.
To fight temperature rise in Dhaka as well as make the city liveable, I have some suggestions to make: There is no alternative to planting more trees in this concrete jungle. The city authorities must save the open spaces we still have, such as playgrounds, small and big parks, lakes, etc. Local trees like Mango, jackfruit, plum, etc should be planted around the playgrounds. We should also stop planting Eucalyptus and Acacia, which are not environment-friendly. If possible, we should excavate some more lakes in Dhaka which will help cool the weather. The DCC can make some rules like the high-rise buildings must leave some space in the front where two or three local variety of trees can be planted. They can encourage and assist the building owners as well to make rooftop gardens.
These are just a few ideas. We can do so many things, if we are willing, to fight climate change and our city's rising temperature.
