Good move by BIWTA
The other day I got a leaflet of BIWTA with my newspaper which said the High Court gave an order to remove all illegal structures from Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Balu and Turag river. So, BIWTA urged all to abide by the court directives. They asked public not to pollute these rivers anymore or catch fishes and other aquatic animals. They also ordered those who have built illegal structures on the rivers to demolish them themselves, or BIWTA would demolish it. They forbade the sand traders to extract sand from these almost dead rivers.
It is encouraging that BIWTA took the matter seriously and came up with this leaflet which would be read by millions of people across the country. This will create awareness among public that our rivers must be saved for our own survival. But obviously, the river grabbers will not give up their encroached land easily. Those structures will have to be evicted by force. BIWTA's work must not end with publishing leaflets, they should do the fieldwork also to save the rivers.
