New high for India in number of coronavirus infections, deaths
The number of coronavirus cases and fatalities across India touched upon a new one-day high of 45,720 infections and 1,129 deaths today, according to health ministry data.
The total number of cases crossed the 1.2 million mark and now stands at 12,38,635 while 7,82,607 people have recovered so far, that is 63.18 percent.
India went past the 1.2 million mark of total cases just three days after it touched the 1.1 million mark, reflecting the pace at which new cases are coming to the fore.
The count of active Covid-19 cases stands at 4,26,167, the health ministry data show.
The fresh fatalities of 1,129 in the last 24 hours pushed the total death toll to 29,861 so far, according to the data.
Five states have so far reported the highest number of cases in the last 24 hours. They are Maharashtra (10,576), Andhra Pradesh (6,045), Tamil Nadu (5,849), Karnataka (4,764) and Uttar Pradesh (2,300).
The five states which registered the highest number of deaths in the last 24 hours are Tamil Nadu (518), Maharashtra (280), Andhra Pradesh (65), Karnataka (55) and West Bengal (39).
Concerned by the spike in number of cases and deaths, a number of states have declared complete lockdown either partially or totally.
A one-day total lockdown went into force in West Bengal today bringing day-to-day life to a near standstill with office and markets remaining closed and all modes of transport going off the roads.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has imposed a six-day complete lockdown across Kashmir Valley, except for Bandipora district, from yesterday following a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in the last three weeks, officials said.
The Valley recorded 502 fresh cases and 243 deaths so far.
A 14-day complete lockdown went into force in the north eastern state of Manipur from today in the wake of a rise in Covid-19 cases in the last few weeks.
