Lavish, but poor Bangladesh

Lavish, but poor Bangladesh

The other day while passing through the footpath in front of the Ramna model police station, I noticed a homeless family of four -- a young man, a woman with a baby to her bosom and another kid -- lying on the walkway, apparently not distracted by the relentless sound of the traffic around. I felt very sad for their appalling conditions; and amazed also, at their never-say-die spirit, though they had no worldly possession whatsoever. Now the question is, even after long forty-three years of our independence, have we been able to meet the very basic human needs of all segments of our countrymen? The answer is not far to seek. The government is lavish with its spending to stage T-20 cricket tournament spectacularly. But alas! The high-pitched merriment of the T-20 will never reach the doors of millions of Bangladeshi homes.
