KHAR brings MMA night to North South University campus

North South University is not the most obvious venue for a fight night, but on 26 April that is exactly what it became. KHAR, the Bangladeshi MMA organisation that launched just last year, brought a full evening of bouts to the campus in what is probably the first time an organised MMA event of this scale has been held at a university in the country.

The show ran in partnership with the university's Games and Sports Club, with IronValley signing on as title sponsor. Head Gear, Gold Kinen, Xtreme and Arabika filled out the sponsorship line-up.

The evening featured both amateur and professional bouts, giving the audience a reasonable spread across competition levels. But the crowd arguably made as strong an impression as anything happening inside the cage. With most of the audience made up of students, the atmosphere had an energy that tends to be harder to manufacture in more conventional settings.

KHAR has been moving quickly for an organisation that has barely been around a year. The North South University show is the latest step in what has been a steady push to bring more structure to local MMA — a sport that has historically lacked organised backing in Bangladesh.

The broader ambition, as the organisation has laid it out, is to develop fighters capable of competing internationally, while building a domestic audience alongside that. Hosting on a university campus fits that thinking fairly naturally — it puts the sport directly in front of the demographic most likely to produce both future fighters and long-term fans.
