Migrant female workers get a raw deal
The report, “Female labour migration from BD marks rise in last 12 months,” published in a local daily has drawn my attention.
In 2013, over fifty thousand female workers migrated to Jordan, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman and Qatar mainly as domestic helps.
According to Bangladeshi Ovibashi Mohila Sramik Association (BOMSA), some 70 per cent of the Bangladeshi female migrant workers face torture by employers mostly for demanding wages at the end of the month. Moreover, BOMSA receives about 100 complaints each month on an average, from the female workers abroad, about physical torture, sexual abuse at workplaces, denial of wages and food.
The government should take appropriate measures for the wellbeing of our female labours working in foreign countries. At the same time, government should prepare women through proper courses and trainings so that they can enjoy better facilities abroad as well as send handsome remittance to the country.
