Doctor's death sparks protest at Jessore

Dr Shafiqul Islam, joint secretary of Jessore Swadhinata Chickitshok Parishad, also one of the owners of Jess Clinic, who was attacked by some local criminals, died yesterday after fighting for life for the last six days at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in the capital. At about 2:00 pm yesterday, BSMMU doctors removed the life support and declared Dr Shafiqul dead. On hearing the news, doctors and medical staff working in the town burst in agitation. They brought out processions protesting the killing and demanding arrest and punishment to the killers. Police and relatives of the victim said, some unknown criminals stormed Dr Shafiqul's clinic and attacked him with sharp weapons and iron rod on the night of July 29. They hit him on the head and hacked several times leaving him seriously injured.
