MM College closed for three days as Shibir, BCL clash
The authorities of Madan Mohan College yesterday closed the institution for three days from today following a clash between the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) on the campus.
Ten BCL men, including college unit President Arun Debnath Sagar, were injured in the clash. Of them, five were admitted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the rest given first aid.
Shibir claimed that five of its activists were also injured during the clash.
Campus sources said a group of Shibir activists beat up Hasan, a second year student who had left Shibir four months ago and joined BCL, on the campus at around 12:30pm. Some teachers immediately settled the matter taking a bond from Shibir men.
At around 1:00pm, Shibir activists swooped on a BCL meeting, leading to a clash between the two sides.
The clashing groups used hockey sticks, iron rods and daggers during the clash that continued for an hour. Some classrooms were also vandalised during the clash.
On information, police and Rab personnel went to the campus in the city's Rikabibazar area, dispersed the Shibir and BCL activists and brought situation under control at about 2:00.
The authorities in an emergency meeting in the afternoon decided to close the college for three days from today to avert further incident.
Police have been deployed on the college campus.
