<i>Wife killed for dowry a day after wedding</i>

A dowry-greedy husband allegedly killed his wife on Saturday, the day after their marriage at West Jabra village under Ghior upazila of Manikganj district. Victim Runa Akter was daughter of Samsul Islam of Jabra village under the upazila. Police yesterday arrested the alleged killer Hasan Khan, son of late Ismail Hossain of the same village, at Manikganj Sadar Hospital. According to the officer-in-charge (OC) of Ghior Police Station, Hasan got himself admitted to the hospital pretending sickness. Locals and police sources said Runa and Hasan were in love for three years. On August 1, Runa went to Hasan's house and pressed him to marry her. Hasan agreed to marry Runa and demanded Tk 50, 000 as dowry from Runa's parents. Accodingly, Runa's father gave Hasan Tk 20, 000 on the wedding day on Friday. The following day, when relatives went to Hasan's house to take Runa to her parents' house, Hasan's family said they won't let Runa go there until the rest of the amount was paid. Runa and Hasan had an altercation over the dowry on Saturday night. In the morning, Hasan informed Runa's family that she committed suicide. Receiving the message, Runa's brother Ripon went to Hasan's house and found her hanging from the ceiling of a room. On information, Ghior police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Manikganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Contacted, Officer in Charge (OC) of Ghior Police Station Afsar Uddin said he suspected it as a murder as the body bore marks of injury. Runa's father Samsul Islam filed a murder case with Ghior Police Station.
