Girl beaten up by gang dies

An 11-year-old girl, who was severely beaten up by a gang of criminals at Shamlapur village under coastal Baharchhara Union of Teknaf upazila on January 16, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Friday. The dead is Monwara Begum, daughter of local fisherman Shamsul Alam. Police and witnesses said Shamsul Alam, a resident of Badarkhali village in Chakoria upazila, has been living with his family in a small dwelling house on a piece of land of the coastal forest department at Shamlapur village for about six years. He has grown different trees including those of mango, jackfruit and plum on his homestead. Locals said Mohammad Sultan of Shamlapur village along with 10 to 12 criminals attacked Shamsul Alam's house on January 16. The gang destroyed his house and looted plums. When they tried to obstruct the criminals, the criminals beat up Shamsul, his wife Dholai Bibi, 30 and daughter Monwara Begum, 11. Critically injured Monwara was admitted to Teknaf Hospital and later shifted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital on January 19. As her condition deteriorated on January 21, she was referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where she died on the night of January 22. A murder case was field with Teknaf Police Station the same day. No one was arrested as of yesterday.
