Two cheats held in Nilphamari
Police arrested six cheats including four members of 'Jiner Badsha' gang in Gaibandha and Niphamari districts on Monday and Tuesday.
Police seized 63 brass-made images of Hindu goddesses and equipment used for casting images from the house of Provat Chandra at village Sakpala under Gobindagnaj upazila early Tuesday, reports our Gaibandha correspondent.
Provat Chandra was arrested on charge of supplying images to the members of Jiner Badsha, a network of cheats, police said.
In another drive, police arrested one Alhaj from village Bagda of Gobindagnaj upazila when he was preparing to receive Tk 60 thousand from one Momtaz Begum of Brahmanbaria district.
Fallen into the trap of Jiner Badsha gang, Momtaz earlier gave money to Alhaj to get relief from 'spiritual curse'.
As the man demanded more, she became suspicious and sought help of police.
Following confession of Alhaj, police later arrested two other cheats -- Harun Mia of village Mariya and Shahidul of village Balua.
All of them are wanted in several cases, police said.
The cheat clique using the name of Jiner Badsha have trapped many people into giving huge money, said Fazlul Karim, OC of Gobindagnaj Police Station.
The gang sold a brass image inscribed with golden letters for Tk one lakh to five lakh each, he said.
Our Nilphamari correspondent adds: Five members of a family in Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district were hospitalised as they became unconscious after taking toxic food offered by cheats on Monday night.
Police arrested the two cheats -- Yousuf Ali, 33, and Santona Begum, 25.
The two strangers introducing themselves as husband and wife, came to the house of Atiqul Islam at Kathali village of Jaldhaka upazila on Monday night, locals and police said.
Saying that they were on the way to a distant place in Bogra, they sought shelter for that night.
As Atiqul allowed the strangers to stay at his house, the couple cooked rice , meat and pulses and persuaded Atiqul and his family members to eat with them.
After taking the meal, all the five members of the family -- Atiqul Islam, 32, his wife Tajmina Akhtar, 30, daughter Rashida Begum, 10, son Tariqul Islam, 6, and Atiqul's nephew's wife Tahmina Akhtar, 18, fell unconscious.
As the sheltered couple stole valuables of the house and made preparations to flee, a female neighbour sensed something wrong and peeped through the hole of the bamboo fencing of the house.
Seeing the unbelievable scene, she began to cry loudly.
Locals rushed to the spot, caught the cheat couple and handed them over to Jaldhaka police.
The victims were admitted to Jaldhaka Upazila Health Complex.
