12 houses, 18 shops and sugarcane field gutted

At least 12 houses and 18 shops besides a sugarcane field have been gutted in fire in four districts. A correspondent in Lalmonirhat reports: Fire gutted 12 houses early yesterday at Napit Para village of Vadai union in Aditmari upazila. Sources said, the fire originated from the kitchen of Ramesh Chandra Shil at around 1:30am and engulfed the adjacent houses. Fire fighters from Lalmonirhat rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire at around 4:00am, police said. Santosh Chandra Shil said, his two houses, one full with tobacco, were gutted. The fire damaged property worth Tk 10 lakh, according to a preliminary estimate. In Barguna, a devastating fire on Friday night gutted 12 shops and a truck at Arpangasia Bazaar of Amtali upazila. Local UP chairman Nurul Haq Talukdar said, the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop at the market and quickly engulfed the adjacent shops. Being informed, fire fighters from Amtali town rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. The loss in the incident was primarily estimated at Tk 25 lakh, Mizanur Rahman, OC of Amtali police station told BSS. A Noakhali report adds: Six shops and a dwelling house were gutted in separate fire incidents in Subarnachar and Sadar upazilas on Wednesday. UNB quoting locals said, a fire originated from an electric short circuit at a tea stall at Charmatua Moulavi Bazaar in Sadar upazila and spread to the nearby five shops at night. On information fire fighters from Maizdi fire station rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze. They estimated the extent of loss from the fire at about Tk 8 lakh. In another incident, a fire broke out at the house of Haris Chowdhury in Hat area of Subarnachar upazila on Wednesday. Locals said, the fire originating from the kitchen burnt down the entire house in the afternoon. Our correspondent in Kushtia reports: Fire gutted around 60 bighas of sugarcane under Darshana Carew and Company on Wednesday. The fire originated at about 2:30pm from unknown sources and gutted the sugarcane of Begumganj field, a commercial sugarcane yielding plot of the company under Chuadanga Sadar upazila. Fire brigade sources said, they brought the fire under control at about 8:30pm. Earlier on December 23, around 125 bighas of sugarcane of the company on Sorojganj commercial plot were gutted.
