The editorial on Dhaka Traffic (DS, Jan 19, 2010), was very appropriate and timely, but hardly adequate. It was like blowing a puff of air to remove a mountain. As media personnel, you have to do something more substantive to make the government declare the traffic situation an 'emergency' and get various ministries to put their heads together to solve the problem. It needs a many-pronged attack, not least of which is slowing down the import of cars, or charging cars which come out on roads. Of course, adequate public transport systems have also to be ensured. In developed countries, traffic management has become a fine science and planning exercise, with the best minds engaged in gauging and synchronizing ebb and flow with office hours, shopping malls, school timings, and long term need of roads. Believe it or not, even human psychology factors into mathematical equations for traffic management.
