Mother strangles daughter

A mother strangled her eight-month-old daughter and dumped her body into a septic tank at Jhinarpara village in Tanore, Rajshahi, on Sunday night. Police recovered the body of Sumaiya, daughter of Ataur Rahman, yesterday morning and arrested her mother Merina Khatun, 32. The police said that after killing her daughter, Merina started crying and shouting, 'My daughter has gone missing'. But at one stage, she confessed to the neighbours that she killed her daughter and dumped the body into the septic tank. "I killed her. I am not a mother, kill me," she was shouting when tegh police arrested her. She told the police that she killed her daughter, as she did not want to stay with her husband any longer, but she could not face the reality that she also would have to leave behind her child if she deserted her husband. Tanore Police Station OC Bazlur Rashid said Merina was sent to jail custody after she was produced before the court. Her husband Ataur Rahman told the police that she had been unwilling to stay with him since their marriage, as she had an affair with someone at her own village. Quoting Merina, the police said her lover did not want to marry her with the child.
