'Provide quality education to create skilled generation'

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday called on the teachers to create an educated and skilled generation by dedicating themselves to teaching students in classes. "We are trying to resolve your [teachers] various problems. But it is your responsibility to produce a competent generation by providing quality education," the minister said at the National Convention 2010 of Bangladesh Government Secondary Teachers' Association on the Government Laboratory School premises in the city. Teachers can play a vital role in building a modern Bangladesh, he added. The minister also said the government is working to introduce a separate pay scale for teachers and establish a separate secondary education department for the secondary level teachers. "I want that the teachers will get maximum salaries and honour both at state level and in society," he added. Placing a set of demands, General Secretary of the association Md Insan Ali stressed the need for regular training for teachers based on curriculum. He also demanded that a separate secondary education department be set up to bring dynamism in official activities and remove complications in providing MPOs. Insan also demanded that the government fill in all vacant posts in the government secondary schools by giving necessary promotions to teachers. Speaking at the programme, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Md Nazrul Islam said steps to be taken to launch websites of the government schools containing information about the institutions, teachers and students. He requested the leaders of the association to contact with him in this regard. Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Prof Md Noman-ur-Rashid, its Director Prof Md Zakir Hossain and association President Md Samsul Haque also spoke.
