9 killed in road crashes
Nine people were killed and 24 others injured in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Natore and Satkhira on Sunday night and yesterday.
Of them, five people were killed in Chittaging, two in Natore and two in Satkhira.
In Chittagong, a city-bound bus rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway at Naya Hat in Patiya upazila around 10:00am yesterday, leaving its passenger, Ferdous Alam, 35, dead on the spot and injuring four others.
The injured -- auto-rickshaw driver Mohammad Faruk and passengers Rezaul and Azizul -- were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the doctors declared Faruk, 45, dead.
Another injured Saber Ahmed, 35, was rushed to Patiya Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries later.
Police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee, Sergeant Bashirul Islam of Patiya Highway Police said.
In other accident, an unidentified woman, aged about 65, was run over by an unknown vehicle at Export Processing Zone Intersection in the early hours of yesterday, reports our staff correspondent in Chittagong.
Police recovered the body around 7:00 in the morning and sent it to CMCH morgue for autopsy, said Officer-in-charge Rezaul Karim of Bandar Police Station.
On Sunday night, a truck driver identified as Wahidur Rahman was killed and two other people were injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Fouzdarhat in Sitakunda upazila.
The accident occurred when a Feni-bound truck hit a stationary truck from behind around 10:30pm on Sunday. The injured -- Shafiqul and Nishan -- were admitted to the CMCH, said the sources.
Our Natore correspondent reports: Agitated people blocked Natore bypass for an hour yesterday morning after two people were killed and at least 20 injured in a road accident in Natore.
The protesters also vandalised a pickup van of police protesting the deaths of Rabeya Begum, 50, wife of Ajimuddin of Boraigram upazila and rickshaw-van puller Thanda Miah of Shahipara village in Gurudashpur upazila.
Local sources said Rabeya was crushed under the wheel of a Natore-bound truck laden with iron rods.
Soon after the accident, the vehicle dashed a microbus and overturned at Ahmedpur Bazar while trying to flee the scene. The van puller died on the spot and 20 others sustained injuries as the truck fell on them.
Fire fighters rushed to the spot and sent the injured to Natore Sadar Hospital and the local upazila health complex.
Our correspondent from Satkhira says: Two people, including a seven-year old girl, were killed in separate road accidents yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Hasan Ali Mollah, 36, son of Abdus Sattar Mollah of village Kismot Elishpur in Kalaroa upazila and Rupa, 7, daughter of Bahar Ali Dhali of village Shitalpur in Kaliganj upazila.
Quoting local people, police said a bus knocked down Hasan on Satkhira-Jessore road at Elishpur intersection when he was crossing the road.
Seriously injured Hasan died on the way to Jessore hospital.
Rupa was seriously injured when a truck laden with brick hit her while she was crossing a road near Nazimganj bazar in Kaliganj upazila.
She succumbed to her injuries on the way to Kaliganj Upazila Hospital.
