15 injured as tornado hits Lalmonirhat villages
At least 15 people, including seven women, were injured as a tornado lashed five villages in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat on Thursday night.
More than 1,000 thatched houses and paddy crops were damaged at the villages of Dawabari, Nawdabash, Purbo Bichhondai, Patika Para and West Bichhondai. Many big trees were also uprooted, said sources at the upazila administration.
The injured were admitted to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex, locals said.
A widow, Momena Bewa, of Dawabari village said, "I had only a house that was damaged by the storm. Now I'm staying in the open. I've no ability to repair the house,"
"I cultivated boro on my only three bighas of land. The paddy ripened but two third of that was damaged by the tornado,” said Amol Chandra, 48, a farmer of Nawdabash village.
After visiting the affected villages yesterday morning, Ashrafuzzaman, upazila nirbahi officer of Hatibandha, sought help from the district administration for the victims.
