More gold recovered, woman arrested

Detectives on Friday arrested a woman and recovered over 116 more tolas of gold out of 782 stolen from a jewellery shop in the city. Police have so far retrieved 331 tolas of gold and detained 11 people since the burglary at Dewan Jewellery of Muktijoddha Super Market at Mirpur-1 on April 25. The arrest of Sajeda Akter alias Suma, 20, and the recovery were made following the arrest of Suma's husband Mohammad Kalam, 28, on Wednesday from Chasara in Narayanganj. Md Solaiman, senior assistant commissioner of the detective brach of police, said they arrested Kalam following information that he went to Narayanganj on May 18 to talk to jewellery shops at the town to arrange the sale of the gold. Kalam asked his wife to come to Narayanganj with the gold on Friday, he said, adding, they arrested her at Sayadabad Bus Terminal in the city on her way to the district town. The officer said Suma was carrying the gold in concealed pockets in her overalls. During interrogation, the couple admitted to the DB that after the burglary they with the gold went to Boltala village of Kathalia upazila in Pirojpur, then Jarkarun village of Betagi upazila in Barguna and then to Tuthpara area in Khulna Sadar upazila. Solaiman said Kalam was the ringleader of the burglar gang having members with skill in cutting walls and breaking locks. Police said the burglars entered Dewan Jewellery on the ground floor of the market, breaking open the locks of adjacent Jyoti Cosmetics and Imitation Jewellers, as they found a hole cut through the wall between the two shops on April 25.
