Domestic worker commits suicide

A teenage domestic help yesterday committed suicide at the residence of a police officer at the Ramna Police Complex in the city. Around fourteen-year-old Nurunnahar, daughter of Nurul Islam of Mirzaganj in Patuakhali, had been working at the residence of Sub-inspector Abdul Kuddus of Ramna Police Station. Shabnam Ahmed Mukta, wife of Kuddus, found Nurunnahar hanging from a ceiling fan with scarf at her room around 9:00am. Following information by Mukta, Ramna police recovered the body breaking open the door. It was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy. Kuddus said the deceased had been working at his residence for the last seven years. Nurunnahar became mentally imbalanced three months ago after her younger sister went missing from the residence of her stepmother at her village home in Patuakhali, said the police officer. The deceased went to sleep around 11:30pm on Saturday and did not respond to repeated calls the next morning, he added.
